Peter H C Barnes

Peter has been recognised as a Recommended Junior Counsel in the Leading Family & Divorce Law Barrister (Hong Kong) ranking in Doyle’s Guide consistently for 2022 2023 and 2024.

Peter has a strong matrimonial practice focusing primarily on highly contested family cases, involving both children and financial disputes.   He also accepts briefs in constitutional and administrative law matters involving judicial review of government decisions particularly those involving immigration/refugee and human rights elements.

Prior to joining the Bar, Peter had practiced for many years in Civil and Commercial litigation in Adelaide and Hong Kong, and was the founder and senior partner of the firm Barnes & Daly, one of the leading firms in the area of constitutional law and human rights litigation.

Since being called to the Hong Kong Bar, Peter has appeared regularly in the Family Court in contested trials of child and financial issues as well as in the CFI and Court of Appeal.

Peter has twice sat as a Deputy District Court Judge in the Family Court in October – December 2019 and January to April 2022.  He accepts instructions in Private FDRs both as counsel representing and as the private FDR Judge.

Peter is a former Chairman (2004-2008) of the Hong Kong Family Law Association.

Peter also practices in Adelaide, where he is a member of a set of Chambers, primarily in administrative law and matrimonial cases.
