Parkside Chambers is pleased to highlight the role Vincent Lung played as sole counsel in the landmark judgment of China Shanshui Cement Group Ltd v Zhang Caikui & Ors [2025] HKCFI 1868 — a decisive win that marks a significant chapter in one of Hong Kong’s longest-running corporate disputes and boardroom fights.
Vincent acted for the 3rd Defendant, namely Li Cheung Hung (李長虹) instructed by Simmons & Simmons.
Handed down by Coleman J on 12 May 2025, the 236-page judgment dismissed all claims brought by the plaintiffs — including allegations of unlawful means conspiracy, breach of fiduciary duty and negligence — in their entirety.
This complex and high-profile litigation spanned over 9 years and culminated in a 35-day trial, involving over 110,000 pages of evidence and 17 factual and expert witnesses. Amidst a field of senior counsel and large legal teams, Vincent Lung stood out as the only barrister who acted alone throughout the trial, securing a huge victory for his client.
The Court held that the plaintiffs’ case was “𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘧𝘭𝘢𝘸𝘦𝘥” and commenced with “𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦”. The case serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of sound pleadings and a solid evidential foundation before serious allegations of conspiracy and dishonesty are advanced.
