Today, Parkside’s Lareina J. Chan delivered an engaging and interactive CPD session at Dentons on “Decrypting Crypto Assets.”

Lareina explored the growing role of digital assets as part of high-net-worth estate planning, before walking through the evolving regulatory landscape for licensing of Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) and the new Stablecoins Ordinance (Cap 656) in Hong Kong. She also provided a clear and practical overview of crypto asset litigation both locally and worldwide.

Focusing on topical issues from recent newsworthy cases, Lareina also touched upon the JPEX scandal from September 2023 – just a few months after the mandatory licensing regime for Virtual Asset Service Providers under the SFC’s jurisdiction came into effect on 1 June 2023.

The session also took a comparative look at the UK’s approach to crypto litigation and the relevant causes of action and relief available, alongside an overview of New York’s latest developments on matrimonial financial disclosure, which now expressly includes crypto assets. The thought-provoking seminar touched upon volatile and ever-fluctuating valuations of crypto assets, including the allocation of illiquidity and high-risk assets in the context of matrimonial litigation.

There was a great turnout with around 20 solicitors in attendance, and plenty of thoughtful discussion throughout.

Lareina maintains a strong matrimonial / family and civil practice, with an emphasis on private client matters. Lareina has substantial experience in all aspects of matrimonial and family litigation, and has been called to the Bar for 12 years. She is regularly instructed in a broad spectrum of matrimonial finance matters and children’s disputes, and has been ranked by Chambers & Partners, Legal 500 and the Doyle’s Guide.
